Progressives for Immigration Reform Website

May, 16 2013

We JUST launched the new Progressives for Immigration Reform site, and while it may look simple enough at first glance, trust us, it's not. This site's clean, light design keeps the large amount of content looking organized and manageable. But, behind the minimalist design is a robust CMS build that allows them to edit virtually everything on the s …

American AV Business Cards
American AV Business Cards

May, 16 2013

We've just wrapped up a snazzy new set of business cards for American AV. These guys know what's what when it comes to lighting and setting up corporate events, and we thought the cards should measure up. By giving it a dark background and some bright red "sound waves" as a design element, the cards look quite tech-y. We also incorporated a die-cut …

Designer

michellanne@topshelfdesign.net

Michellanne is from Smithville, Texas and earned her BFA at Washington University in St. Louis. Growing up, she was the student who did sketches in the margins of her homework.  As a fashion major in college, she loved illustrating fashion figures and laying out inspiration pages. Her education also included drawing, painting, and an extensive study of textile history.

Following graduation, she moved to New York to be a fashion designer. However, most of her time was spent corresponding with factories and measuring necklines.  She missed creative work!  Michellanne ditched her job and moved to the DC area where she started off as an intern at Top Shelf.  Now a full-time graphic designer, she spends the majority of her time dreaming up website and logo ideas.  She also runs TSD’s internship program.  And, she never, ever makes her interns get her coffee.  Or deliver zippers.

In her free time, Michellanne enjoys cooking, running, and expanding her shoe collection.

Although Terry Ann did not discover graphic design until she was in college, art was always her favorite class in school and as a kid, she drew her own paper dolls and crafted clothing for them from wallpaper sample books. She majored in Studio Art and Art History at Gettysburg College and then continued on to Rochester Institute of Technology to earn her MFA in Graphic Design. She spent two years working in the marketing department of an architecture and engineering firm before arriving at Top Shelf in the summer of 2011.

Learning about the various companies and industries whom she works with is one of the things Terry Ann enjoys most about being a graphic designer. Understanding clients’ goals and translating them  into aesthetically pleasing, effective designs is an important part of her job.

Outside of work, Terry Ann spends a lot of her time running, swimming, and doing other outdoor activities. She likes exploring DC, traveling, and hopes one day to have a White’s tree frog as a pet.

When Kathryn took over as President of Top Shelf Design, the company had six clients and did most of its work in a coffee house. Over the past seven years, Kathryn has built Top Shelf Design into a thriving enterprise with hundreds of clients and more than two thousand design projects completed.

Kathryn has a strong track record of making companies successful and a passion for business professionalism. Prior to Top Shelf Design, she held a senior executive role in a national staffing firm and she holds an MBA from the University of Maryland.

Creative Director

gena@topshelfdesign.net

Gena joined TSD in 2006 as their first employee. Since then she’s not only seen the company grow but has been an integral part of their success. As a life-long lover of design, the best part of her job is being able to oversee all of the creative output of TSD. By now, the number of projects that she has handled is in the thousands.

Even though art has always been central in her life, it wasn’t until college that Gena found the field of graphic design. By way of the journalism school, she found a practical application for her creativity. She holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Journalism (concentration in Graphic Design) and Spanish.

Gena is a native Washingtonian (yes, really!) and recently purchased her first house. So, if she’s not behind her computer you can probably bet she’s on a ladder or digging a fence-post hole in her yard. The only exception is in late March when you’ll find her glued to the TV cheering on her Tar Heels!

She has built an impressive portfolio, including a Student Silver ADDY for Interactive Media/Websites, proving that experience isn’t ALWAYS key, but passion is. Design Philosophy

Define

We challenge you to explore your company from a variety of perspectives—your target market, future company goals and employee culture. During our relationship we strive to intimately understand your business and work with you to envision your company in ways your never thought possible.

Create

Our design process is centered around collaboration—between the design team, and with our clients. Through a unique and proprietary design process, we start with our client’s ideas and take them to new levels. The lead designer gathers input from other creative minds within our group and presents a design that is both understandable and visually stimulating.

Deliver

Top Shelf Design’s team consistently produces effective and cutting-edge web, print and branding material using the highest quality technology and materials to visually communicate your message. From the designers to the account managers, we promise to be a design firm that you enjoy working with.

TSD History

It all began at a kitchen table. That’s where a talented designer and two entrepreneurs who dreamed of creating a graphic design firm that exceeded the industry standard for quality and customer experience formed Top Shelf Design, LLC. Nearly a decade later, our company has completed over 5,000 projects for more than 2,800 clients. Owners Brendan and Kathryn Kiel and a staff of highly creative and dedicated designers, developers, and account managers continue to keep true to the vision established in 2004.  We are now a respected Washington DC web design and graphic design firm. And the kitchen table is still in our conference room to remind us of our beginnings.

The Art of WOW! Event Planning & Design

Design Needs:

The founder of Art of Wow, a budding event planning firm that does upscale birthday parties and corporate events, came to TSD with high expectations. With experience planning several birthday parties for family members, she was ready to pursue her passion full-time. Our mission: to create a sensational, eye-catching, cohesive brand that makes you say “WOW!” She left the creativity up to us, but expressed a love for bright pink, bright green and script fonts.

Council for Exceptional Children

Design Needs:

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is an international professional organization whose mission is to improve the educational experience of all individuals with exceptionalities, including disabilities and gifts and talents. Each year, CEC hosts a conference  for professionals in the special education field. The planning for the annual conference begins more than a year in advance and CEC chose TSD to work on their 2014 conference materials. They wanted to create a captivating comprehensive campaign that embodied the spirit of Philadelphia, the host city. In addition to designing a logo, print advertisements, and online banners, they asked us to brainstorm unique promotional giveaway items since they used the same ones every year. In order to promote the 2014 conference at their 2013 convention, many of the materials had to be created quickly.

D.C. Department of Disability Services

Design Needs:

Octane is a public relations and advertising firm that came to TSD looking for a logo design for their client (D.C. Department of Disability Services). Octane created a number of logos internally, but couldn’t get the client’s board of directors to agree on the same logo. So, the firm hoped our designers could get the job done. We knew this project would be challenging for several reasons. Besides gaining the approval of the directors, we also needed to incorporate feedback from a focus group.  In addition, we had to develop a logo that represented disability challenges without using typical non-profit imagery – and would be DC-centric. Finally, we had to accomplish all this without being able to communicate directly with the client.

The Gray’s on Pennsylvania

Design Needs:

The Gray’s on Pennsylvania is a government-assisted apartment complex on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC. The complex features modern amenities and comfortable city living. The developers came to TSD looking for a brand identity for the building. The challenge was to create an identity that was memorable, had strong curb appeal to draw in prospective residents, and represented the neighborhood. The branding also needed to be flexible enough to be appropriate for multiple types of projects. Additionally, we were in charge of creating the name of the complex.

New Zealand Embassy/Trans-Pacific Partnership

Design Needs:

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, in conjunction with the New Zealand Embassy, came to TSD looking for a logo for their initiative. The initiative involved 10 countries spread across the world. So, the challenges were clear from the start. We needed to create a logo that represented these countries and their new partnership. In addition, we had to get all the countries to agree on the same logo. These challenges posed potential issues with the design, as well as with client management.

Academic Travel Abroad

Design Needs:

Academic Travel Abroad (ATA) is a travel company and tour operator that specializes in unique educational travel opportunities. ATA came to us looking for a way to stand out in a competitive market that includes National Geographic and The Smithsonian. But, creating a distinct look and feel wasn’t the only challenge. TSD also needed to work in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History. All designs had to undergo multiple internal reviews from both organizations while staying within their brand guidelines.

Noelle’s cosmetics feature fun, vibrant colors that appeal to a younger demographic.
